Strengthening human discernment.
Think First is an independent initiative to strengthen human discernment in an age of accelerating information and technology.
Through public inquiry, publishing, the Library of Discernment, the M Fellowship, and the development of M Reasoning, Think First works within the interval between perception and judgment—before assumptions harden into certainty and judgment becomes action.
Think First does not tell people what to think. It strengthens the habits by which they determine what deserves to be believed.
M Reasoning
The M Architecture
Think First is the principle. M is the practice.
M is the selective intellectual and technological architecture through which Think First carries its purpose into practice. It designates the people, systems, methods, and bodies of knowledge entrusted with advancing that purpose.
M Reasoning is the developing human-accountable reasoning system within that architecture. It is designed to help individuals and institutions examine evidence, assumptions, uncertainty, and competing explanations before judgment.
Guided by the M Reasoning Protocol, it makes reasoning more visible while keeping responsibility for conclusions human.
Public Inquiry
Think First with Jim Detjen
Some questions deserve more than immediate answers.
Think First with Jim Detjen is the flagship public-inquiry program of Think First. It examines the ideas, assumptions, evidence, events, and stories that shape how people perceive and understand the world.
Each episode practices intellectual curiosity, disciplined inquiry, and the careful examination of claims before conclusions are formed.
Foundational Work
Distorted
The stories we inherit shape the realities we experience.
Distorted gives permanent form to the inquiry that began with Think First. It examines how language, institutions, media, memory, and culture shape perception—and why discernment has become an essential human capacity in an age of accelerating information and technology.
Rather than offering easy answers, the book invites readers to examine assumptions, test claims, and become more careful observers of the world around them.
The Library of Discernment
“The quality of a civilization depends, in part, on the quality of the ideas it chooses to preserve.”
The Library of Discernment is a growing, curated collection of enduring works selected because they strengthen the habits through which people pursue truth, understanding, and sound judgment across the fifteen Fields of Inquiry.
These are not simply books worth reading. They are books worth returning to.

The M Fellowship
Ideas worth preserving. People worth learning from.
The M Fellowship is an invitation-only, enduring intellectual community now being established. It recognizes individuals whose lives and work have made consequential contributions to knowledge, understanding, and disciplined inquiry across the fifteen Fields of Inquiry.
Think First welcomes broad participation in the practice of discernment. The M Fellowship recognizes those whose lives have advanced it—one invitation at a time.
